As a founding member of the Ilderton and District Lions Club, Lion Bev was actively involved in helping to organize the club over a nine month period prior to the club's charter in 1954. Following the club's first year of operation, all three vice-presidents resigned from the club and Lion Bev was elected president for the 1955/56 term along with a complete new board of directors. Lion Bev also served the club as Zone Chairman (1956/57) and Deputy District Governor (1957/58). He spent many years as the club's secretary and has served on almost all of the club's committees at one time or another. Along with fellow Lion Mac Gray, Lion Bev was instrumental in starting the first Lion's sponsored boy's hockey league in Ilderton located in the old skating rink. A few years later, he and Lions Tom Hughes and Russell Rush were part of a committee which successfully petitioned the London Township Council to build a new arena and curling rink, a project that the Ilderton and District Lion's Club donated generously to. Lion Bev has especially enjoyed his involvement with the Elimination Car Draw committee (now the 300 Club) over the years and is proud to have been the club's Barbecue Chairman the year that we barbecued 4500 half-chickens on parade day of the District A Lion's Convention at Western Fairgrounds in London. Lion Bev was employed as an A.I. Technician for 45 years and holds the distinction of being one of about only 15 technicians in Canada to have inseminated over 100,000 cows. Bev and his wife, Betty, have two daughters and two sons and have been blessed with 10 fine grandchildren. Although retired from his regular job, Lion Bev continues to attend Lion's functions regularly and to contribute to the betterment of his community.
