Wheelchair Curling Donations

The Ilderton and District Lions made two donations in support of wheelchair curling this past month.

As a not-for-profit sporting organization the Ilderton Curling Club makes the ice available to wheelchair curlers. As well, volunteers regularly assist in organizing and running programs. There has been an increased interest in the sport however, some are using a motorized wheelchair.

The club’s ramp onto the ice was not adequate for the larger motorized wheelchairs (some of which can weigh hundreds of pounds). The motorized wheelchairs are wider and the ramp requirement is for a gentler slope.

The Lions accepted the challenge and thanks to community support were able to donate all the funds required for the new ramp.

Coincidentally members of the Ilderton Curling Club qualified to compete at the Curling Canada Wheelchair Championships in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. However, competing is not as simple as getting on a plane and heading west. Moose Jaw is limited in the number of wheelchair accessible vehicles available for the week. As a result some members of the team will be traveling by van from Ontario.
